The plant forms an upright woody stem, at the apex of which is a rosette of large oblong-ovate dark green or glaucous-green leaves. The crop usually reaches a height of 1.8–3.0 meters, but under favorable conditions is capable of growing up to 5.5–6 meters. It is a perennial or biennial plant.
The variety is characterized as slow-growing: the vegetation period until maturity is about 180 days. The crop is distinguished by high winter hardiness and the ability to grow on various types of soils, including heavy clay, as well as by resistance to the influence of sea winds.
Historically, the stems were stripped of leaves and used to make walking sticks or as building materials. The leaves are edible as greens and were also traditionally used as livestock feed. Currently, it is grown primarily as an ornamental or collector's crop.
