The Bortfelder variety, also known as Herbstrübe Bortfelder or Bortfelder Gelbe, belongs to the autumn turnip group. The roots have an elongated shape and yellow flesh. The plant is characterized by relatively slow growth.

The roots have good keeping quality and a pronounced sharpness of taste. Due to their elongated shape and deep rooting, the use of garden tools, such as a shovel or pitchfork, may be required during harvest.

The variety is distinguished by high susceptibility to clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae). It is an heirloom landrace variety traditionally used as a table crop.
