A local pepper ecotype, also known as «paesanello di Altino», is traditionally grown in the area between the Sangro and Aventino rivers. The variety name translates as «heads pointing upwards», which indicates the vertical position of the peppers on the plant.
The fruits have a purple-red color, an irregular shape with a square base, reaching a length of up to 18 cm with a diameter of about 4 cm. The crop is grown in open field using drip irrigation; seeds are sown in February–March, and harvesting takes place from late August to November.
The produce is used fresh, for drying in various forms, or for making a paste (cream) preserved in olive oil. This ecotype is the result of many years of folk breeding and is maintained by custodian farmers.
