The name Gambo originated as the trade name for a red pepper that was new to the Israeli market, introduced by the Hazera company in 1948. Due to the high popularity of the variety, the word itself became the everyday designation for the category of sweet peppers in the language.
The variety is not represented in the company's modern commercial catalogs, as it has been replaced by new breeding hybrids. In documentation, the name is sometimes encountered as a description of the fruit shape type, rather than as a specific variety.
