The variety is a mutant that retains chlorophyll at biological maturity, causing the fruit color to vary from chocolate to dark brown. Traditionally, the variety is used for drying or making paprika.
In the scientific community, Negral is often used as a susceptible control sample when assessing the resistance of pepper to viral diseases, such as tomato spotted wilt virus and tobacco etch virus.
