The variety is the result of folk selection and is adapted to the volcanic soils in the Roccamonfina area. The fruits of the variety have a characteristic rounded shape, from which it derives its name, and are distinguished by a delicate taste.

The chestnut is used primarily for roasting, and due to its technological characteristics, it is sometimes classified as a marrone type, suitable for industrial processing. The variety is included in the list of products with the Protected Geographical Indication Castagna di Roccamonfina and has the status of a traditional agri-food product.
