The Palummina variety is a local Italian ecotype of sweet chestnut that developed in the province of Avellino. It is considered the main component of Castagna di Montella production, accounting for approximately 90% of the total volume of this Protected Geographical Indication.
The fruits of the variety are medium or medium-small in size, rounded in shape, have a thin skin and sweet white flesh. They are versatile in use: suitable for consumption fresh, dried, frozen or roasted, as well as for the production of flour, candied chestnuts and the specific product Castagne del Prete.
The variety shows a certain resistance to the chestnut gall wasp, which is expressed in a smaller number of galls formed and increased mortality of the pest larvae, including through the influence of natural enemies.
