The Onur variety was developed by the Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute as part of programs to develop local, high-yielding, and resilient varieties. It is intended for the commercial cultivation of food chickpeas, meeting market standards for quality, color, and seed size.

The plant belongs to the Kabuli type, which is characterized by a beige color and a large, round seed shape. The variety's selection is aimed at adaptation to the regional climate, including the possibility of early winter sowing, as well as increasing resistance to anthracnose and types of wilt.
