The Solkanski variety is a local plant of the Goriška region in Slovenia, where its cultivation has been known since the end of the 19th century. In specialized literature, it is classified as a type of red chicory (radicchio), although in a number of international catalogs it is formally assigned to the witloof group.

The plant forms dense, crunchy rosettes, shaped like a rose. The variety is distinguished by high resistance to summer drought and winter cold. Sowing of seeds is traditionally carried out in June-July. After forcing, the produce acquires a delicate taste without pronounced bitterness.
