As a witloof chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum), the variety «Totem» is mentioned in international breeding studies as one of the F1 hybrids used for forcing. In modern publications, it is often cited as an example of an older generation of varieties that have been replaced by more resistant hybrids.

In the Russian State Register of Breeding Achievements, a root chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. sativum) variety is registered under the name «ТОТЕМ». This variety is intended for processing into a chicory beverage and belongs to the root crop group of cultivars.
