The evergreen tree reaches a height of 6 to 10, sometimes 13 meters, and possesses a rounded crown. Thorns 5–8 cm long are located in the leaf axils on young shoots. The leathery leaves have an elliptical or oval shape with a characteristic broad-cordate winged petiole.

The fruits have a round or slightly flattened shape, a bright orange thick uneven peel, and sour pulp with a pronounced bitter taste in the membranes and the albedo. The large white flowers are distinguished by a strong aroma.

The plant is resistant to citrus diseases and pests. The fruits are used for the production of marmalade, candied fruits and liqueurs, while essential oils are obtained from the leaves, flowers and peel. In plant cultivation, the species is often used as a hardy rootstock for other citrus crops.
