The plant is an evergreen tree 2 to 10 meters in height with a rounded crown and long thorns on the branches. The leathery dark green leaves have characteristic broad winged petioles. Fragrant white flowers can be solitary or gathered in axillary inflorescences.

The spherical fruits, 6–8 cm in diameter, have a thick, bumpy, orange-red peel rich in essential oils and sour-bitter pulp. Fruit ripening usually occurs between November and January.

Bitter orange is distinguished by increased frost resistance and resistance to citrus diseases. It is actively used in the food industry for creating marmalades and liqueurs, in perfumery for obtaining oils, and in agronomy as a rootstock for grafting.
