Variety description

10 August 2026

The bitter orange is an evergreen tree 2 to 12 meters tall with a rounded crown and thorns on its branches. The leaves are leathery, dark green, with winged petioles and essential oil glands. The flowers are white and have a strong fragrance.

The fruits ripen between November and January; they have a thick, bumpy, bright orange peel and acidic, bitter pulp. The plant is sensitive to frost, prefers a warm climate, and has high resistance to a number of diseases and pests.

The plant is used as a source of essential oils, a raw material for the production of marmalades and liqueurs, and in pharmaceuticals. In agriculture, it is used as a hardy rootstock for other citrus varieties; in landscaping, it is used for the decorative design of parks and alleys.
