The plant is an open spreading shrub or tree 3–4 meters tall with large thorns on the branches. The leaves are oval in shape, the flowers are creamy-white, and flowering occurs in March–April. The fruits are large, ellipsoid in shape, reaching 25 cm in length, with a bumpy, often ribbed peel.
The fruits ripen between September and November. The pulp is dense, pale green or yellow, practically without juice or acid, and belongs to the sweet citron group. The fruits are not consumed fresh; their primary value lies in the thick albedo used for making candied fruits, jams, and liqueur.
