Variety description

10 August 2026

The species originates from the foothills of the Himalayas and is a shrub or small tree 2–3 m in height. The shoots are equipped with single thorns 3–5 cm long. The leaves are dense, oblong-oval, often having a purple hue in young shoots and dark green in mature ones. Large white flowers with a reddish tint can appear several times a year.

The fruits are characterized by a large size from 12 to 40 cm, have a yellow or orange color and a very thick, bumpy peel. The pulp is low-juicy, sour or sweet-sour with a characteristic bitterness. The plant is thermophilic and is damaged at temperatures below –3…–4 °C. The main use of the fruits is associated with ritual purposes, as well as with the production of candied fruits, jams, and essential oils.
