The variety was selected from traditional seeds that had been preserved by local farmers for many generations. The improvement program, which lasted about 25 years, included the collection of samples, as well as their morphological, agronomic, and biochemical characterization.

The plant is intended for the preservation of biological heritage, use in traditional Portuguese gastronomy, and for agricultural needs in order to study the properties of the plant and promote pollination.
