The term Filbert Cob brings together plants whose fruits exhibit traits of both cobs and filberts. In horticulture, these forms are historically grouped together due to the similarity of fruit appearance and cultivation methods; the most well-known representative of this category is the Kentish Cob variety.
The plant is a deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 6 meters if left unpruned. The crop matures starting in September. The culture prefers well-drained soils and sites protected from frosts, as severe winter cold can damage the male catkins.
The plant is used as a nut-bearing crop for harvest and for ornamental purposes, for example, to create hedges. Yields increase significantly when other varieties are nearby for cross-pollination, although some forms of this group may exhibit partial self-fertility.
