The breeding clone DUNDEE is an interspecific hybrid obtained from open pollination of Corylus colurna. Its primary purpose is to be used as a specialized rootstock for hazelnut (Corylus avellana), allowing for the minimization of unwanted root suckering in commercial orchards.
Trees grafted onto this rootstock are characterized by increased yield and vigor. The clone provides later bud break, which reduces the risk of damage from spring frosts, and contributes to improved drought tolerance and resistance to iron deficiency. The variety is not intended for nut harvesting and is evaluated exclusively based on its technical characteristics.
An important characteristic of the clone is its high susceptibility to Eastern Filbert Blight (Anisogramma anomala), which has significantly limited the scale of its application.
