The rootstock was obtained through open pollination of Corylus colurna and is often described in literature as an interspecific hybrid. Using this rootstock increases tree growth vigor and influences yield, as well as the qualitative characteristics of the scion kernels, including oil stability and skin color.

An important disadvantage of the rootstock is its high susceptibility to Eastern filbert blight, which has limited its widespread commercial use. The morphological characteristics of the plant are determined primarily by the chosen scion, as the main value of the rootstock lies in reducing costs associated with sucker removal.
