The Galactica variety was obtained by crossing European and American lines. The growing cycle is 90–100 days, which allows the plant to avoid drought and stress conditions of late spring and early summer.
The plant is grown as an industrial crop for the production of oil containing about 52% erucic acid, which is used for the production of biolubricants and plasticizers. Meal can be used in limited quantities in animal feed, provided that the content of glucosinolates and erucic acid is controlled.
The variety possesses increased seed yield and high oil content compared to a number of early varieties. Due to established protocols for plant regeneration from explants, the variety is often used as a model object in biotechnological research.
