The variety belongs to the netted melon type (var. reticulatus) and is a heirloom crop of folk selection, traditionally grown in the Minho and Douro regions of Portugal. In literature, the name may be used as a general designation for a group of varieties with a characteristic rind texture.
The oval or round-shaped fruits reach a weight of 1.5–4 kg. A distinctive morphological feature is the embossed gray-green rind. The flesh has a pale yellow or orange hue, a juicy consistency, and a sweet honey taste, sometimes with spicy notes.
The intended use of the fruits is primarily for dessert. Due to the dense and rough structure of the skin, the variety possesses good transportability and a long storage life.
