De Almeirim represents a group of traditional varieties, the product of many years of breeding by local farmers in the Ribatejo region. The melons belong to the Inodorus group, often called winter melons, and are characterized by late maturity.
The fruits have an oval shape and reach a weight of 2 to 6 kg. The rind is firm, with a characteristic reticulated or striped pattern, retaining a greenish tint upon ripening. The flesh is fleshy, juicy, and aromatic, having a yellowish-white color with a possible salmon tint near the seed cavity. The minimum sugar content is 13 degrees Brix.
Cultivation requires fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and the absence of frosts. Agronomic practices include traditional shoot pinching and fruit thinning, where one fruit is left per stem to achieve high crop quality.
