The plant is a vigorous climbing vine with runners 5–10 meters long and large five-lobed leaves resembling those of a fig tree. The fruits are round or oval in shape, with a hard, dark green rind with a light pattern, and juicy, loose, fibrous white flesh.
The crop is late-maturing, characterized by high resistance to diseases, including root rots, and the ability to ripen in the cool conditions of highlands. Due to the durable rind, the fruits possess exceptional keeping quality and can be stored for many months.
The primary use of the fruits is culinary, in particular for preparing jam from the fibrous flesh. Young fruits can be consumed like zucchini; seeds and young shoot tips are also used. The species is often used as a rootstock for other Cucurbitaceae.
