The species Cucurbita ficifolia Bouché is used in vegetable production as a rootstock for grafting cucumbers and other cucurbit crops. It possesses a strongly developed root system, which contributes to better absorption of water and nutrients by the grafted plants.
The use of this rootstock increases the scion's resistance to Fusarium wilt and other soil-borne pathogens. Grafted plants exhibit greater tolerance to low temperatures and less regular irrigation, and they also demonstrate more intensive growth and increased yield. The rootstock possesses good biological compatibility with most modern cucumber hybrids.
