This is a late-maturing plant with vigorous vines reaching 10–15 meters in length. The shoots are characterized by rapid growth, are capable of rooting at the nodes upon contact with soil, and can anchor to supports using tendrils.

Fruits weighing from 1.4 to 10 kg have an oval shape and coloring reminiscent of a watermelon. The white flesh has a juicy consistency, and the seeds are black. The species is highly resistant to soil-borne pathogens, which determines its use in commercial vegetable production as a rootstock for cucumbers, watermelons, and melons.

In addition to use as a rootstock, the fruits are suitable for culinary applications in soups, salads, or desserts. The plant is also used for ornamental purposes in vertical landscaping.
