The variety is synthetic, derived from crossing the Grasslands Apanui variety with Portuguese populations of the diploid subspecies lusitanica. Colchicine was used in the breeding process to produce the tetraploid form. Plants of the variety are characterized by an erect growth habit, lower tiller density compared to the original forms, and wider, longer leaves with a glaucous hue.
The variety is adapted for use in swards under rotational grazing on fertile soils. It demonstrates improved forage digestibility and increased protein content during the spring period. Heading occurs at times similar to the Apanui variety, with the peak of flowering occurring in mid-December.
The variety possesses increased resistance to rust compared to earlier breeding forms of cocksfoot.
