The variety forms clumps of upright branched stems. The flowers are gathered in large ovoid heads of an intense metallic blue color, which also extends to the stems. The leaves have a serrated shape with spines.
The plant is sterile and does not produce seeds. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils. In rich or excessively moist soils, it may lodge and require support. The variety is winter hardy and is widely used in landscape design, as well as for cut flowers and as a dried flower.
