The plant reaches a height of 60 to 100 cm and forms clumps with a diameter of 50–66 cm. The leaves are deeply dissected with prickly margins. The inflorescences are large steel-blue or intense bright blue heads surrounded by prickly bracts.
Flowering occurs from June to August or September. The inflorescences retain their ornamental quality for up to three weeks and are suitable for use as dried flowers. The variety requires well-drained soils, as it is sensitive to excessive moisture, which triggers root rot.
