The variety Gold Queen is an evergreen shrub with glossy foliage colored dark green with golden centers. A distinctive feature of the plant is its pronounced bushy shape.

In taxonomy, this variety belongs to the species Euonymus japonicus and is not a variety of Euonymus fortunei, despite the existence of similarly named forms in the latter.
