The variety was obtained as a result of breeding work at the Fairbanks Experiment Station, which began in 1958 under the direction of Arvo Kallio. It was first introduced in 1968 and became widely distributed in amateur gardening in Alaska and Canada.
The plant is valued for its resistance to low temperatures, which facilitated its cultivation in northern regions. The variety has practically gone out of widespread commercial circulation and is currently used primarily in home gardening.
