The Apex variety belongs to spring two-row barley types. The plant has a short stem and belongs to the mid-early maturity group.

In breeding practice, the variety is related to the Triumph and Piroline varieties. In a number of breeding programs, Apex was used as a parent line for developing new barley varieties.
