The variety was obtained by crossing Vintage and Chariot varieties. It belongs to the malting barley type and is characterized by good yield and grain quality. It is currently considered an obsolete variety, has been withdrawn from testing, and is not listed in current recommended crop lists.

Information existing in online advertising about a supposedly existing "Canadian transgenic barley variety Aspen" is not supported by scientific publications or agronomic reference books. The data on yield and plant characteristics provided in such advertising texts lack a documented basis.
