The variety belongs to the six-row spring barley type. It is characterized by the presence of rough awns, short hairs on the rachilla, and a white aleurone layer of the grain.
The variety was the first in the North Dakota State University breeding line to possess resistance to loose smut. During field trials, it demonstrated yields at the level of the Traill variety.
