The variety is a spring two-row barley bred in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. The main purpose of the variety was grain production, however, it is also widely known as an important parent form in breeding programs aimed at increasing yield.
In scientific research, the Fatran variety was often used as a model object when studying biological processes, including the study of seedling thermotolerance and the analysis of the electrophoretic spectrum of hordein proteins. The variety is practically absent in modern registers, having been displaced by new breeding achievements.
