The variety was obtained as a result of a breeding program by the Agricultural Research Institute of Cyprus. It was initially tested under the name "Roho" and subsequently released under the name Kantara, which was later officially registered as Kantara 1.
The variety is intended for cultivation under dryland farming conditions without artificial irrigation. Its primary purpose is use as livestock feed in the form of grain or hay. The variety is included in official agricultural crop registries according to EU materials.
