The winter barley variety Kiruna was bred by breeders O. Streng and E. Eder in Germany. Its pedigree is based on a combination of the lines St. Streng, Dura, and V. Gold.
In the course of scientific research, the variety was considered in the context of studying the genetics of powdery mildew resistance. Under conditions of Northern European pathogen populations, the variety demonstrated reaction types to infection of 0, 1–2, and 2–3.
Current data on the modern agronomic traits of the variety, including plant height, maturity group, or grain quality characteristics, are absent in the sources.
