The variety is two-rowed, spring-type, and hulless. The plant is characterized by moderate straw strength. In breeding programs, it is used as source material for developing new hulless barley varieties with improved nutritional properties; in particular, it serves as one of the parents of the AAC Beckett variety.
The primary purpose of the variety is food use due to its increased beta-glucan content, the levels of which exceed those of many traditional malting varieties. The grain also possesses a specific polysaccharide composition, including arabinoxylans.
