The Niki variety is a Greek barley that is widely used in the academic environment. It is an object of research on anther culture for obtaining haploid plants and studying the genetic potential of the crop.
In agronomic experiments, the variety was used to evaluate the effect of tillage systems and fertilizers on root system development and physical soil properties. Biochemical analyses of the grain were also conducted to determine the content of protein, β-glucans, phenolic compounds, and tocols.
The variety has an origin associated with the Karn/Yaktana 5481 genetic line and serves as an important resource for breeding in Greece.
