Variety description

10 August 2026

The spring barley variety Octavia is characterized as a short-stemmed plant with a stem height of approximately 73 cm. It belongs to the early-maturing category, ripening one day earlier than a number of popular varieties for distillation. The variety possesses high resistance to powdery mildew, as well as good resistance ratings for yellow rust, rhynchosporium, and brown rust.

The grain of this variety does not contain the gene responsible for the production of glycosidic nitriles and is valued for high hot water extract values and low nitrogen content. In trials, the variety demonstrated a yield level of 104% of the control. In addition to direct use in the production of malt and whisky, the variety is used in breeding programs as a parental component.
