The variety is of the winter type and has a six-row ear. It is a feed variety and is frequently used in scientific programs as a genetic reference for studying frost resistance and allelic variations of genes such as Dhn4 and Dhn7.

In breeding work, the variety has been used to create hybrid populations, in particular when crossed with two-row spring varieties to study the genetic characteristics of various traits.
