The variety is an old Irish variety of barley that has formed over the centuries. Genetically, such populations possess a wide diversity of traits, conditioned by centuries of adaptation to the soil and climatic features of the region.
In agronomical terms, the variety is not a modern breeding product; therefore, it is not characterized by standard height indicators or maturity groups. Compared to modern hybrids bred for intensive farming, this barley has a lower yield.
Previously, in the early 20th century, attempts were made to select pure lines due to the heterogeneity of the seed material. Today, the variety is grown on a limited basis within the framework of programs for the revival of ancient grain crops, mainly for the needs of distilleries producing whiskey with an authentic flavor profile.
