The variety is a spring barley Hordeum vulgare L., adapted for cultivation in arid plains regions. The plant is characterized by marked resistance to abiotic stresses, in particular high temperatures and moisture deficit.
Phytosanitarily, the variety is susceptible to the Russian wheat aphid Diuraphis noxia. Otis is also used as a control sample or object of study in genetic research concerning resistance to net blotch, caused by the pathogen Pyrenophora teres.
