Compact upright shrub reaches 1–1.5 m in height and width. Shoots are strong and thick, supporting large spherical inflorescences 20–25 cm in diameter, consisting of four-petaled flowers. Broadly ovate leaves have a dark green color, a tough leathery texture, and a serrated margin.

Flowering lasts from June to September. The variety requires the preservation of previous year's shoots, on which buds are formed. Flower color varies: in an acidic environment (pH 4.5–5.2) they acquire blue or blue-violet shades, in neutral or alkaline — pink.

Winter hardiness ranges from -18 to -23 °C; in cold regions, protection is required to preserve the buds. The plant prefers fertile moist soils and semi-shaded areas. Used for single and group plantings, container cultivation, and cut flowers.
