The variety has characteristic, well-defined concave sepals. When grown under appropriate conditions, the inflorescences acquire a saturated blue color.

In literature and catalogs, the variety is found under the name Souvenir d'Édouard d'Avdeew, and it may also appear under the synonyms Etanin and Hercule Poirot. It is important not to confuse this variety with Hydrangea heteromalla Edouard d'Avdeew, which is a separate taxon.
