A distinctive feature of the variety is its striking dark purple, almost black, young stems. Leaves are broad, dense, elliptical in shape, serrated, and deep green in color. The shrub reaches a height of about 1.2 m and a diameter of about 0.9 m.

Inflorescences are globular, about 15 cm in diameter, consisting primarily of sterile flowers. The color depends on soil acidity: on acidic soils they are blue, on alkaline ones — bright pink.

The variety blooms primarily on previous year's shoots, therefore it requires winter covering in regions with cold climates to preserve flower buds. The name Mandschurica is most often mentioned in publications as a synonym for the Nigra variety.
