The term translates as "local" or "domestic" and denotes folk populations historically cultivated by farmers. This is genetically heterogeneous material, therefore a unified description of the variety's characteristics is absent.

The plant is an annual legume crop adapted to growing on poor and dry soils. The stems are hollow and equipped with tendrils; the seeds resemble small stones or compressed particles in shape.

Local populations are characterized by a high protein content (23–34%) and are used mainly as a forage crop for obtaining green mass, hay, and grain, and are also historically consumed as human food.
