The plant belongs to the Boraginaceae family. It reaches a height of 10–20 cm with a width of up to 30–60 cm. The leaves are narrow, lanceolate, dark green, and pubescent. The flowers are five-petaled, funnel-shaped, about 1.2 cm in diameter, and white in certain breeding forms.
The species prefers full sun and very well-drained acidic or neutral soils. The plant does not tolerate heavy clay soils and excess moisture well, which can lead to the development of root rots. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer.
The plant is used for landscaping alpine slides, rockeries, and retaining walls. The name «Pure White» is often used as a commercial designation for white-flowered forms of the species, which may also be known under the names «Alba» or «White Star».
