The plant is an evergreen low-growing subshrub, which is usually classified as a creeping perennial with a height of 10–20 cm. The habit forms dense carpet or cushion-like mats covered with small lanceolate dark green slightly pubescent leaves.
Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, with possible sporadic reblooming. The plant prefers sunny areas with light partial shade and well-drained acidic soils; it is sensitive to waterlogging and heavy clay soils. Winter hardiness corresponds to USDA zones 6–9.
