The variety is a tetraploid form of Italian ryegrass intended for use in forage production. The plant is characterized by an erect or semi-erect growth habit in the autumn period.

The variety has been actively used in studies evaluating pasture productivity and forage harvesting in the form of haylage and dry material. Compared to a number of similar varieties, Sabalan is distinguished by a lower content of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber with similar digestibility indicators.
