The Gran variety is a tetraploid (T) variety of Italian ryegrass. Studies of genetic variability note its genetic similarity to the Kaja, Telga, and Atos varieties.

The variety is intended for use in fodder production, in particular for the establishment of hayfields and pastures, often in mixtures with legumes, such as alfalfa.
